Giving in Honor of a Mother

A gift in someone’s name can say what a card cannot, and it can honor a mother whether she is near, far, or gone.

Mother's Day is Sunday. For many families, that means flowers, a card, a brunch reservation. Those are good things. But some people want to say something more lasting about the woman who raised them, taught them to pray, or showed them what faithfulness looks like.

A gift in her honor can do that. It says: the good you put into the world is still moving. And it can honor a mother whether she is across the table, across the country, or no longer here.

What a Tribute Gift Is

A tribute gift is a gift to a charity made in someone's name. It is usually called 'in honor of' when the person is living and 'in memory of' when the person has died. Most churches and ministries are glad to receive them, and many will send a card or letter to the person being honored.

The gift itself goes to the charity. The honoree does not receive money or anything of value. What they receive is the knowledge that their name is attached to real good.

She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy.

Proverbs 31:20 (ESV)

How to Give in Her Name

The process is simpler than most people expect.

  1. Choose a Charity That Fits Her

Think about what she loved: her church, a ministry she prayed for, a cause she served with her own hands.

  2. Look for the Tribute Option

Many giving pages have a box for an honor or memorial gift. If not, call the office and ask.

  3. Give Them Her Name and Address

The charity can send her a note. Most do not share the amount, only that a gift was made.

  4. Tell Her Yourself

A short handwritten letter explaining why you chose this cause often means more than the gift.

Giving Through a Donor-Advised Fund

If you give through a donor-advised fund, many sponsors let you add a tribute note to a grant recommendation, such as 'in honor of' a named person. The sponsor sends the grant to the charity with that note. Options vary by sponsor, so check what yours allows.

The same grant rules apply. The grant goes to an eligible charity, not to your mother directly, and it cannot provide anything of more than incidental value back to you or your family, such as a gala ticket.

Ideas That Fit Different Mothers

Every mother is different. So are the causes that would make her smile.

  • For the mother who taught you to pray: her home church, or a ministry that trains children in the faith.
  • For the mother who fed everyone: a local food pantry or a church meal ministry.
  • For the mother who welcomed children who were not born to her: a foster or adoption ministry that supports families.
  • For the mother who loved to read: a literacy program or a Christian school library.

When the Day Is Hard

Mother's Day is not simple for everyone. Some people are grieving a mother who died. Some have a painful or distant relationship. Some women long to be mothers and are not, and some have lost children. Churches that notice these people on Sunday are doing holy work.

A tribute gift can be a gentle way to hold that grief. You can give in memory of a mother, in honor of a spiritual mother who stepped in when yours could not, or in honor of the women in your church who mother everyone around them. There is no wrong way to honor the people who shaped you.

Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord; also his mother, who has been a mother to me as well.

Romans 16:13 (ESV)

A Gift That Keeps Her Story Going

Many families find that a single tribute gift becomes a tradition. Each year, the children choose a cause together in honor of their mother or grandmother. Over time, it becomes a way to tell her story to people who never met her.

Whatever you choose this year, the heart behind it matters most. The best tribute is not the largest one. It is the one that carries forward what she taught you.

One honest reminder: giving always costs you more than it saves. A deduction lowers your tax by a fraction of the gift, never the whole gift. Give because you want the money to do good, and let the tax rules help that generosity go further.

The Short Version
  • A tribute gift is a charitable gift made in honor or in memory of someone, and the charity often sends them a note.
  • Choose a cause that fits her life, and add a personal letter explaining why.
  • Many DAF sponsors allow tribute notes on grants. There is no second deduction for the grant, and no benefit can come back to you.
  • For those for whom the day is hard, a memorial gift or a gift for a spiritual mother can be a gentle way to honor her.
